Why did you apply for the BSc (Hons) Secondary Design and Technology with QTS course?

I was working as a design engineer and had been in the industry for 15 years.  As part of my job I was construction ambassador and visited schools to promote engineering by delivering fun educational activities. I realised that I absolutely loved working with children and teaching in general.  A friend of mine was already in her second year of study on the course and she gave me some information and advice on how to make a career change.  This led to me enrolling on the course.

What did you enjoy about the course?

I really enjoyed the practical element of the course and the fact that you get to make projects that are relevant to the school curriculum.  Another positive aspect of the course was meeting other prospective teachers with similar interests and ambitions, some of which have become very close friends that I continue to stay in touch with, not only socially, but also to share ideas, resources and to support each other.

What were you most nervous about as a trainee teacher?

I was quite nervous about getting up in front of a class and being observed by a qualified teacher.  The university helped to prepare me for this by giving us the opportunity to take part in ‘micro-teach’ sessions.  This helped to build our confidence and allowed our peers to give us some constructive feedback.

Tell us about your career?

I currently work at Afon Taf High School in Merthyr Tydfil and am Head of Design and Technology.  I teach all areas of D&T at KS3 (with most emphasis on resistant materials and systems) and I teach engineering to KS4 pupils.

How does it feel to have realised your dream?

Realising my dream of becoming a teacher has been absolutely fantastic.  I enjoy every single day and even though it’s often a difficult job, the rewards are fantastic.  Working with young people and seeing them aspire to better themselves makes me feel extremely humble.  It is the best decision that I have ever made.
